I remember, during my childhood, how my mother used to find ways of keeping me at bay during the weekends whenever she wanted me to study instead of going out to play all day๐Ÿ˜Œ. She'd try feigning a visit to my favorite grandparents which, up to a time, didn't work anymore because i knew the outcome of that strategy๐Ÿ˜†. She knew she couldn't try using sweets too because i had tooth problems at that time๐Ÿ˜ฌ but one secret weapon that got me to stay at home all the time without luring was banku.

Banku originates from the Ewe people in the Volta Region of Ghana and is one of the best staple Ghanaian foods. It is mostly consumed by the Ewe and Ga Dangme people in the coastal parts of the country. Like some staple foods in Ghana, banku differs due to changes in ratios of dough parts or minor additions. It is known in different parts of the country as wokumรฉ, akple, kom and many more.
Banku paste
Banku is prepared by a mixture of fermented corn and cassava dough powder in warm water. The mixture is stirred until the much desired whitish paste is acquired. The paste is then shaped into desirable forms using a small bowl, a cup or even the hands.

Banku can be found throughout Ghana and is enjoyed by all tribes in the country. Although it is mostly eaten with okro stew or soup, it can also be enjoyed with various varieties of stews, pepper and soups.
