Your Cassa-plantain, Our Fufu

Once upon a time, there lived Onyankopon(God). He was very huge and he covered the whole earth.  He  lived on earth with his people because he loved them so much that  He couldn't live a second without inquiring about their well being.
He lived with people like meko(pepper), bankye(cassava), ena(fish), and others. There was an old lady also living on earth with Onyankopon called Eno Atta. She was a very good cook and generous. She liked to prepare sumptuous delicacies to enjoy with the her friends. But Onyankopon had a problem with Eno Atta.
Eno Atta pounded fufu daily with a very long pestle which hit Onyankopon anytime she raised her pestle.

One day, Eno Atta was going on with her usual business of pounding her fufu with that long pistol of hers. On that fateful day, the long pistol pushed Onyankopon very high into the skies and Onyankopon has been there forever. This is why Onyankopon lives in the skies(Heaven) and  we live on earth.

This was one of the Akan "tooli" we were told during story sessions in primary class. I always wonder how true the legend is but who knows.....

Fufu is a staple food originating form the people of the Akan ethnic group of Ghana. The food, due to its popularity, has gained funny names like foofoo, foufou, fuofuo, sakora๐Ÿ˜†, sakoro, couscous de Cameroun in other West African countries.

In Ghana, the meal is prepared by pounding boiled cassava and green plantain in a large wooden mortar using a wooden pestle and turned with the hands until the much desired smooth texture is made.

Mordern technology has made the preparation of fufu much easier with the introduction of fufu machines for a much faster result.

For those who do not have the time to pound fufu or visit the fufu pounding machine, the fufu powder was made to be stirred in a saucepan with warm water until the smooth texture is made.

The mixture is then shaped into our traditional halves and is served with soups of all types.
You can have yours with meat-filled light soup in the afternoon.

With crab-garnished palmnut soup on saturdays..

And my personal favorite๐Ÿ˜ with fish and groundnut soup๐Ÿ˜‹

To those who haven't tried fufu yet or do not eat it at all๐Ÿ˜

Let me tell you something..
