Your Cassa-plantain, Our Fufu

Your komi, our Ga kenkey

komi
In my last post, i wrote about a special drink made from fermented corn that is well consumed along the coastal parts of my homeland, Ghana. Well  am here to show you another popular staple food product made from fermented corn. If you haven't read my Asaana article you can check it here.

Kenkey, also known as komi or kokoe or dorkunu is a staple Ghanaian dish originating from the Ga people(my people😎) of West Africa. Yes,i am a proud Ga boy😀.
Kenkey is made from grounded corn which is left to ferment for a few days before cooking. The solution is partially cooked and allowed to cool then wrapped in its popular corn husks.
wrapping the kenkey balls

Our Ga mothers have a special way of wrapping the kenkey balls with the husks using their hands to give it the unique shape many have come to love.
After the wrapping process, the kenkey is steamed until soft and cooled for serving. Do you know that the water left from the steamed kenkey is also a drink? Yes ooo!!! My people call it "ŋtiishinu"😋

You can make a snack outta that liquid by adding sugar, milk and groundnuts(optional) to taste.
Just like banku, kenkey can be eaten with various types of soups, stew and pepper.
Best eaten with fish and pepper, kenkey can be eaten anytime of the day.
In the morning with pork chops, onions and pepper.....

In the afternoon with fish, eggs, veggies, shrimp and sardine.
And in the evening with okro stew...

Kenkey is a meal fit for every occasion... Weddings, funerals, get together hangouts, picnics, you name it😊.....
